Sacramento, California Travel Advice October, 2006 10/3/2006 - Tons of expensive housing even though there is nothing but open fields all because of overzealous strict zoning. No big time companies have corporate headquarters here nothing but government buildings and regional offices yawn this cities entire economy must be made up of real estate related stuff - nothing but real estate agents, mortgage brokers and construction workers. City tends to not improve roads and traffic just keeps getting worse every year. Downtown is way off to the complete left side of the city, which is extremely far from the three largest suburbs, roseville, folsom and elk grove. Howe avenue, arden area is nice sunrise blvd is hell stop go stop go rush hour almost all day. People all rushing around caught up in themeselves dont even know there neighbers type thing not much shopping and very crappy weather where its scorching hot and dry all summer without so much as a cloud for months at a time fields are just ugly brown dry grass with no trees. 10/3/2006 - I enjoy the array of shopping centers and nightclubs, however, traffic and parking are almost always an issue. Value depends on the specific area you are visiting. Not a bad place to hang out for a weekend and catch a basketball game as the city strongly supports the Sacramento Kings- whether win or lose!!! 10/3/2006 - Sacramento and the surrounding areas are pretty good places to live. I would say Roseville and Rocklin are the best areas to stay in. The best hotel by far is the Amber House Bed and Breakfast. There are a number of great restaurants, including the best place to eat in the entire world, The Kitchen. You can check them out at thekitchenrestaurant.com. And Mellow Me Out on Fulton Avenue is a fantastic spa! There are some great theatres that play foreign/independent films: The Crest and The Tower. The 2 movie theatres in Roseville are nice, and while the one on Greenback is a nice theatre, the clientele usually ruin the ambience, so stick with Roseville. If you just want to hang out around town, you can hang out in Old Sacramento and visit the shops, drive out to Salmon Falls Lake in Folsom and go hiking, check out Denio's, go to one of the numerous gyms in the area, go skydiving in Davis, take scuba diving lessons locally... there are a million things to do!
