My favorite thing to do when I go to Madrid is to go to Plaza Mayor, drink a big beer and a eat bocadillo de tortilla espanola. Tortilla espanola is egg with potato-kind of like a thick omlette and bocadillo just means sandwich on baquette bread instead of sliced. When you enter Plaza Mayor from the chinese restuarant side (you'll see what I mean!), on the left hand side in a little side street is a place that only sells bocadillos. It has a sketchy sign, but their food is amazing. I like to get a bocadillo and a beer to go and take it to the center of Plaza Mayor, sit and just hang out, watch the sites and eat. I have stayed at few hostels in Madrid, but I would recommend Cat's hostel which is off of Calle Atocha. This hostel is awesome for their service and for their interiors-designed like the Alhambra in Granada.
